LINEAR A-LEVEL COURSE CONTENT

The subject content for Business is structured so that the first year of the A-level starts with a foundation topic ‘What is Business?’ and moves into decision making within the functional areas
of business; marketing, operations, finance and human resources. The first year will have the same content as AS course and the second year will be more focused on the strategies business use
and their effectiveness. Theme 3 and Theme 4 move from functions to strategy.

You will explore influences on business strategy and decision making and understand how businesses mitigate risk and uncertainty. You will also explore global business and the opportunities and issues facing businesses in today’s global world.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO THIS COURSE?

GCSE 5 grades 9-4 including GCSE English and Mathematics at grade 5 or above. You will also need a grade 5 in GCSE Business Studies if taken. Good ICT skills would also be useful.

WHAT SKILLS WILL I DEVELOP?

You will develop the knowledge and skills needed to analyse data, think critically about issues and make informed decisions – all skills that are needed for further study and employment. Real life case studies will be used to make it easier for students to relate to and apply their knowledge and skills developed throughout the course.

You will acquire competence in quantitative skills such as the ability to calculate cost, revenue, profit and break-even; problem solving, decision making, self- motivation and effective time management skills. You
will gain transferable skills which can be put to use in both everyday life or if you decide to take a completely different career path.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THIS SUBJECT?

The subject content is designed to engage students through topics and issues that are relevant in today's society –you will study key contemporary developments such as digital technology, business ethics, and globalisation. Business is a contemporary subject that is dynamic, progressive and useful in every aspect of life. It is relevant to all professions whether you choose to start your own business or progress in the business you work for. Anyone with a general interest in business, ethics, the economy, finance, marketing, human resources, management, will enjoy the course.

HOW MANY EXAMS DO I HAVE TO TAKE AND WHEN DO I TAKE THEM?

Year 13: 3 exams at the end of the course.

Paper 1 - Data response essay questions based on Theme 1 and Theme 4
Paper 2 - Data response essay questions on business activities, decisions and strategies based on Theme 2 and Theme 3
Paper 3 - A research task before the exam. The questions in the exam are linked to the context you will research

WHAT MIGHT STUDYING THIS COURSE LEAD TO?

Business AS or A level will prepare any student for the world of work and enterprise, and is an excellent basis for a career or a university degree course in Business, Finance, Economics or the Social Sciences. Business touches on pretty much every aspect of modern human society.

Business lays a foundation for any career path you choose from Investment Banking, Marketing, Retail, Law, Information Technology or even Dentistry, as you gain problem solving skills, knowledge of finance and understand how a business operates that is essential in all aspects of life.
