16-19 Bursary Information Letter

The 16-19 bursary is available to support our most vulnerable students and those students where there is a financial barrier to participating in full time education. All students who were on Free School Meals in Year 11 will be offered the opportunity to apply for the 16-19 bursary which may provide a weekly income to help support study or provide help for one off events such as field trips. There are two types of bursary available:

  1. Vulnerable Student Bursary
  2. Discretionary Bursary

Students can apply for the Vulnerable Student Bursary if they fall into one of the following categories:

  • Young person in care aged 16 or 17
  • Care Leavers aged 16, 17 and 18
  • Young people in receipt of income support aged 16, 17, 18.
  • Disabled young people in receipt of Employment Support Allowance who are also in receipt of Disability Living Allowance.

Eligible students will receive £1200 for the academic year, paid in half termly installments which are adjusted pro-rata based on attendance.

Students can apply for the Discretionary Bursary if they fall into one of the following categories:

  • Received Free School Meals in Year 11.
  • Live in a household where the total gross annual income is less than £20,000 (evidence required).

Eligible students will receive either half termly payments which are adjusted pro-rata based on attendance AND/OR a one off payment towards a trip/visit/piece of equipment OR items bought for them e.g. books/travelcards etc… The precise form the bursary takes is at the school’s discretion with the focus that those who are most in need will receive the greatest help.Given the very limited size of the pot of money for the bursary, the school will seek value for money for any items purchased for students and this may mean buying second-hand or refurbished equipment.More information about the 16-19 Bursary can be found on the government’s website: https://www.gov.uk/1619-bursary-fund/overview .
